What is your purpose?
I used to hate the word “purpose.”
The quest for my purpose plagued me for years. I wasn't fulfilled in my job and had no clue what my purpose was! In fact, I went on an around the world journey to find my purpose! I expected my purpose to arrive in every new destination. Perhaps on the steps of a temple in Bali or at the feet of my guru in India. Didn't find it there. Ah, but maybe my purpose was hiding in the Trevi Fountain in Rome.
Nope. Not there either.
Prior to my travels, I was looking for my purpose in job applications, interviews, fancy apartments and relationships. It wasn't there either.
You know why?
Because our purpose is not in a person, place or thing. It is not in a job, a career path, salary, boyfriend or hobby.
Our purpose is to evolve into the most authentic expression of who we truly.
Because from there, we can show up as the infinitely wise, confident, powerhouse women that we are. The result of this? We only engage in work that sets our souls on fire and makes an impact. We only have relationships with people who love and support us. We plant ourselves in environments that inspire us and allow us to grow.
YOU are your purpose.
So you may be saying, "ok that all sounds good, Claire, but how do I evolve into the most authentic expression of myself."
Is the quest for your purpose plaguing you?
Yep. I’ve been there. I went around the world (literally) searching for my purpose. Wanna know a secret? Your purpose is not in a person, place or thing. It is not in a job, a career path, salary, boyfriend or hobby. Our purpose is to evolve into the most authentic expression of who we truly are.
Because from there, we can show up as the infinitely wise, confident, powerhouse people that we are. The result of this? We only engage in work that sets our souls on fire and makes an impact. We only have relationships with people who love and support us. We plant ourselves in environments that inspire us and allow us to grow.
YOU are your purpose. Period. So stop looking outside of yourself, sister!
You may be saying, "ok that all sounds good, Claire, but how do I evolve into the most authentic expression of myself."
Here are three tangible steps you can take this week.
1. ASSESS YOUR DAILY HABITS.
How do you start your day? Is it by instantly diving into work emails? How do you end your day? Are you glued to a screen? Do you eat at your desk?
Think of your ideal day. What are 4-5 acts of self care you KNOW make you feel amazing. For me, it is no phone for the first hour of my day, meditation, journaling and exercise. I call these my "pillars of self care." If I do these every day, I know I will feel great. So what are yours?
Challenge: Pick one act of self care and start doing it daily, today!
2. TRY SOMETHING NEW!
Do you have a secret desire to take a pottery class? Maybe you have always wanted to start a blog. Or maybe you are curious about climate change. Could you sign up for a webinar?
When I was going through my career change, I facilitated a leadership program, led a group of students to Japan, I was a production assistant on a food TV show and I filmed my own pilot for a travel TV show in Colombia. These all led me to writing you this email today in Mexico City.
You may be thinking, "well I don't know what to try!" Don't let that stop you. You may have heard of my joy journal method. It is quite simple. For at least a week, write down 3-5 things that brought you joy that day. This will give you some data on what you can try.
Challenge: Try one thing that you are excited and curious about this month.
3. STOP DOING THINGS THAT DON'T SERVE YOU!
This seems simple, but really, how often do we engage in activities and relationships that we know are not adding anything to our lives?
For me, I was in a habit of numbing out on Netflix at night which left me feeling exhausted and uninspired the next day. So I cancelled my subscription for the month. I don't even miss it anymore and now I do things like read, Facetime friends and bake vegan treats.
I want you to think of 1-2 to things that aren't serving you. If you aren't sure, do a daily energy assessment for a week. What are 2-3 things that raised your energy that day. What are 2-3 things that brought your energy down that day. There's your data!
Challenge: Stop doing one thing that isn't serving you this month!
I would love to hear what action steps you are committing to this month so I can support you and be an accountability buddy. Just comment below and let me know!
